I contracted with Microsoft to develop and launch a new content initiative for their user research division. I spoke with leaders from the Microsoft Research + Insight team about how to break into user research. Their advice emphasized curiosity, collaboration, and the importance of staying flexible, both in how you think and how you build your career. The result is a candid look at what it really takes to grow in a field that’s always evolving.

I joined the Microsoft Research + Insight team to report on how user researchers were reshaping the hackathon experience. Instead of late-night coding sprints, teams collaborated on meaningful projects inspired by personal stories and real-world impact. From interview tools for people with autism to assistive tech for those with ALS, the work reflected a deep commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and customer-focused design.
